Spending time in nature, whether by the beach or in a forest, can have a surprisingly powerful and positive impact on our well-being. These experiences are often described as refreshing, peaceful, and rejuvenating. A substantial body of scientific research has established that spending time in natural environments offers profound benefits for both physical and mental health.

Leading universities, including the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the University of Maryland, Cornell University, and Stanford University, have contributed key insights in this area and have proven a strong connection between nature exposure and mental health:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Nature lowers cortisol (the stress hormone), providing a deep sense of relaxation and helping to manage anxiety (2,3,5).

  • Decreased risk of depression and psychiatric disorders: Harvard and Stanford researchers found that time in nature is linked with lower rates of depression and rumination, and better resilience against mood disorders (2, 6, 7).

  • Improved mood and cognitive function: Walking or simply spending time in a park lifts mood, sharpens focus, and enhances memory and executive function (2, 3,6,8).

  • Beneficial for children: Green environments have a measurable impact on children’s mental health, reducing risks of developing psychiatric and attention disorders later in life (2, 6).

In this room we added woven leather as an unusual upholstery to a platform bed, and we used a sculptural dresser (applied thousands of pine pyramids to create a textured wood pattern). We added a rattan light fixture, and a stump-side table as solid-wood block. We sourced all hand-made art: a ceramic vase, textured wood & metal art pieces. We added a plenty of natural plants. We sourced a beautiful cotton bedding and wool blankets and found a hand-made wool rug from Turkey.                                            design by All About Design Studio, 2025

Adopting the studies on positive connection of nature to human health All About Design Studio prefers to introduce their clients to practices of Biophilic Design. Introducing plenty of natural light, plants, natural materials like wood and stone, using natural patterns and textures and colors, adding water features into your home or work environment - a practice known as biophilic design - fosters a stronger connection with nature and can significantly enhance well-being of inhabitants of this built environment. (9, 10)

Biophilic Design connects us to Nature and aims to bridge the gap between indoor and outdoor spaces, promoting a sense of being surrounded by nature (11).

Studies show that exposure to natural elements, like plants and natural light, can lower stress levels and promote relaxation (12).

By fostering a sense of calm and connection, biophilic design can contribute to improved mood, reduced anxiety, and enhanced cognitive function (13).

Plants, in particular, help purify the air and create a more vibrant atmosphere (14).

Biophilic design enhances the visual appeal of space, adding warmth, texture, and a natural aesthetic (15).

With over two decades in interior design, we found that incorporating natural elements is one of the most effective ways to infuse warmth and character into any space. Consider installing natural oak floors, or a reclaimed wood shelving for an inviting, rustic accent, or introducing a stone feature wall to bring subtle, organic texture and a sophisticated, timeless feel. Elements like woven wool rug and rattan furnishings and light fixtures not only add visual interest through their natural patterns but also create a seamless connection to nature, enhancing the biophilic ambiance of your interiors.

We recommend introducing these materials thoughtfully and incrementally when walking through space, which allows you to experiment and discover the ideal balance that reflects your unique aesthetic vision and lifestyle.

We sourced all hand-made art: a ceramic vase, textured wood & metal art pieces, we added ceramic hand-made sculpture found on flea market, and a couple of nature-made crystals to bring Earth element to this environment.
